Panzer IV at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.

The German PzKpfw IV ausf G is a recent addition to the Patton Museum collection. The vehicle was originally at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds (APG) in Maryland since it was brought back for testing after being captured in Tunisia in 1942.

After the war it was put on display in a building at APG along with several other captured vehicles and weapons. At some point several of the foreign tanks, including the Panzer IV, had their sides cut out so visitors could see the inside. During the Vietnam War, the Army had need of the exhibit building and all vehicles and heavy ordnance were displayed outside in a field. The Armaments Museum was built alongside to house the small arms and light ordnance, but the open vehicles suffered from the elements for over 40 years.

The Panzer IV's interior has deteriorated during this time, but the Patton Museum hopes to cosmetically restore the interior and exterior of the vehicle and put it on display inside the museum.

Ausf G or F2?
The Panzer IV has a feature that may cause some to think it is an ausf F2 version because it has the rounded, globular muzzle brake instead of the baffle type muzzle brake found on ausf G models. While this was always considered a feature of the F2, this vehicle has an ausf G turret that is signified by the lack of the right turret front port and vision ports on the turret sides forward of the side doors. It does have, however, signal ports in the driver's and RO's hatches, a feature that was on ausf F version hulls. This vehicle may have been built during the transition from F to G.
