Work on the 251 halted for a time while the engine was being overhauled. During this break, volunteers Randy Smith (l) and Robert Decker (r) begin removing lube caps on the tracks in preparation for lubricating each track link connection. |
While most German tracked vehicles of the time had dry pin connections, halftracks required each link be lubricated to prevent excessive wear on the track connections. |
SSG Chia-Hung Liu from Taiwan, doing training at the U.S. Army Armor School, lends a hand at removing lube caps. |
Robert and Randy begin the time-consuming chore of lubricating the tracks as volunteer John McKeating looks on. |
This 251 has a late pattern of track with metal pads instead of the normal rubber pads found on most 251s and other German halftracks. This was due to rubber shortages at the end of the war. |
A lot of work has been completed on the 251. The engine overhaul is complete and will be reassembled and mounted as soon as possible. |
